Moose was spotted running along a street in Debrecen
A moose was spotted running along Veres Péter Street in Debrecen shortly before 7 am on Sunday, October 25, surprising local residents. The unusual sighting was captured in both photos and video.
Tímea Lukács photographed the animal and shared the pictures in the Debrecenben Hallottam Facebook group. A video of the encounter was also shared with local news outlets, including Cívishír.
The appearance of a moose in Debrecen was unusual, as Hungary is not part of the species’ typical range. In Europe, moose primarily inhabit northern and northeastern regions, including Scandinavia, the Baltic states and Poland. They generally prefer forested areas with wetlands and other sources of water.
Moose occasionally wander into Hungary, but sightings remain rare. It was not immediately clear where the animal had come from or how it had reached the city.
The sighting also raised the possibility that it could have been the same moose spotted near Nyírszőlős, in neighbouring Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, earlier in October. Footage recorded near the bypass road there showed a moose running across a field. However, there was no confirmation that the two sightings involved the same animal.
Anyone who encounters the moose in or around Debrecen is advised not to approach or disturb it, but to allow it to continue on its way undisturbed.
