Man charged after damaging car in anger in downtown Debrecen
The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges of disorderly conduct and another offense against a man who took out his anger on a car by damaging it in the street.
According to the indictment, the defendant, his wife and their minor child were walking through downtown Debrecen at around 6 p.m. on June 14, 2026, and their route took them across a pedestrian crossing.
At that time, a man was driving a passenger car through the area. Due to his inattention, he endangered the physical safety of the defendant and his family, which made the defendant angry.
The driver subsequently stopped, and the defendant approached him. In an agitated state, he repeatedly punched the window of the car’s front left door while loudly shouting and verbally abusing the driver with vulgar language. The defendant then grabbed the door handle with both hands and began pulling it, causing the metal handle to break off and plastic components of the locking mechanism to be damaged.
The defendant’s provocative, antisocial and violent behavior was capable of causing outrage and alarm among people in the street. In addition, by damaging the door handle and locking mechanism, he caused HUF 58,220 in damage to the car’s owner. The damage has not been compensated during the proceedings.
The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment with the Debrecen District Court seeking a criminal order against the defendant, who admitted committing the offenses, for the misdemeanors of disorderly conduct and causing minor property damage. The prosecutor’s office requested that the district court, without holding a trial and based on the contents of the case file, place the defendant on probation as a measure and rule on the civil claim submitted by the car driver during the investigation, granting the claim.
