Innovative AI solutions were presented at the Faculty of Informatics competition

Students had the opportunity to put their artificial intelligence development skills to the test in an intensive development environment during the third and final round of the DEIK.AI Challenge 2026. Innovation, creativity, teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration all played key roles in the two-day AI Sprint.

Over the past few weeks, students took part in the Faculty of Informatics’ DEIK.AI Challenge 2026 competition series. In the first round, they presented their AI-based ideas, while in the second stage, the AI Demo Competition, they had the opportunity to showcase their own developments in action. The projects considered the most promising were invited to the two-day AI Sprint final, where participants worked on real-world problems in an intensive development challenge, creating new features or complete solutions. In the final round, individual development skills, collaboration, initiative and creativity were all important factors.

The three-round competition aimed to provide professional support for promising developments, identify potential directions for further development, and encourage participants to pursue research, commercial and international opportunities.

András Hajdu, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen, emphasised that one of the competition’s key objectives was to identify developments and collaboration opportunities that could eventually lead to solutions suitable for research applications or even commercialisation.

“The competition series goes beyond the walls of the university. Although our primary aim was to give students the opportunity to present their artificial intelligence-related developments and innovative ideas, at every stage we were looking for concepts, proposed solutions and working models that address real-world problems and could potentially be used in a business environment in the future.

“We also involved competitors in challenges affecting the university, the city and the wider socio-economic environment. The fact that students came from several different academic disciplines clearly demonstrates the broad demand for AI-based technologies, ranging from agriculture and healthcare to engineering.

“Drawing on their own experiences and the challenges they encountered in their surroundings, participants worked on solving real-life problems, many of which were part of everyday life. This also fulfilled the competition’s multidisciplinary objective: collaborations spanning different faculties and academic fields were established, and several innovative ideas and developments emerged that are worth pursuing further. Their next professional, research or development steps can now be identified,” the Dean told hirek.unideb.hu.

During the AI Sprint, participants had to improve their solutions and develop new features within a short period of time. The intensive development environment revealed not only which projects were capable of making rapid progress, but also which developments had realistic potential for further research, business applications or even international expansion.
