Increased police checks to begin in Debrecen

The head of the Debrecen Police Headquarters has ordered enhanced police checks.

The head of the Debrecen Police Headquarters has ordered enhanced checks throughout the department’s jurisdiction in Debrecen, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 27, 2026, pursuant to Section 30 of Act XXXIV of 1994 on the Police and Section 26 of Ministry of the Interior Decree 30/2011 (XI. 22.), which governs police service regulations.

The purpose of the checks is to prevent, detect, and stop unlawful activities, according to the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters.

Crime on the Rise in Hajdú-Bihar, but New Police Chief Is Optimistic

Recently appointed police chief Richárd Bakk has invited local media representatives back for the first time in many years to brief the public on a new approach to police communications.

He emphasized that, although fully direct cooperation with the media will still not be possible, communication will receive greater attention to ensure the public is kept regularly informed and to counter false information spreading online.

The new police chief also answered questions on several public safety issues.

One topic raised was the increasingly pressing problem of electric scooters. The police are awaiting new regulations under Hungary’s Highway Code (KRESZ), but they have already introduced new measures aimed at preventing accidents.

Public surveillance cameras are also a useful tool, significantly assisting police officers, whose numbers are sometimes limited. Although the chief stated that staffing levels across the county are adequate, he noted that the use of these cameras and the software-based recognition systems that analyze their footage can greatly speed up investigations and other police procedures.
