Air quality deteriorates in Debrecen

The dry weather that has persisted for several days, accompanied by mostly light winds, is unfavorable for air quality. Air pollutants have accumulated in several parts of the country, and air quality has already deteriorated in several cities, Időkép reported after analyzing the air pollution map.

The locations experiencing poorer air quality include Szombathely, Budapest, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Szeged and Békéscsaba. The deterioration is primarily due to higher concentrations of particulate matter, although ozone and nitrogen dioxide levels have also increased in some areas. In Szombathely, air quality is already unhealthy due to the concentration of PM2.5 particles.

Over the next one or two days, particulate matter concentrations could rise above the health threshold in more places, but a change in weather is expected soon. On Thursday, southerly winds will strengthen over an increasing part of the country, followed by the arrival of a cold front in the evening.

The strengthening winds, followed by precipitation expected in many areas on Friday, could clear the air, meaning that air quality could improve significantly in the second half of the week.
