A cold front is coming – here’s how much rain it could bring to the parched ground
Wednesday will remain mostly calm with high, thin clouds, but a cold front will reach Hungary on Thursday. Temperatures could drop by several degrees behind the front, while rain, showers and thunderstorms may develop in some areas, according to the HungaroMet forecast.
The cold front is associated with a frontal system linked to a cyclone currently located near France, which is gradually moving east-southeast. During the day on Thursday, the front will still be approaching Hungary, but it is expected to reach the country in the evening.
Wednesday will be mostly characterized by high, thin clouds. Thicker clouds may appear over Transdanubia during the night, while clearer areas may occur elsewhere. Winds will generally remain light. Morning temperatures will mostly range between 1 and 7°C, although temperatures could be several degrees lower in frost-prone areas. Milder conditions are expected in the inner parts of larger cities, higher-altitude areas and near bodies of water.
During the day, mostly sunny weather with high, thin clouds will continue, although a thicker band of cloud may move from the west towards the east and northeast. This could temporarily result in cloudier conditions, but no precipitation is expected on Wednesday. The southerly wind may come with strong gusts in several areas, and the wind may become strong around Sopron.
Afternoon temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach 23–26°C.
The weather will change on Thursday, as the cold front brings rain, showers and thunderstorms, particularly to northern and northwestern Hungary. Several degrees of cooler air will arrive behind the front.
According to HungaroMet, however, there is still some uncertainty in the forecast, particularly regarding the extent of the temperature drop. In the Debrecen area, for example, it is not yet clear how significant the cooling will be.
The amount of precipitation is also not expected to be significant. This is particularly unfavorable because the amount of precipitation recorded so far this year has remained below 200 millimeters in many areas, meaning that large parts of the country are already in serious need of rain. According to the forecast, no substantial precipitation is expected over the coming week either.
Forecast models indicate that around 6–7 millimeters of precipitation could fall in the Debrecen area between Thursday and Sunday.
