A bus driver who ran a red light and hit a pedestrian in Debrecen has been fined and banned from driving Category D vehicles
The driver of a scheduled bus who ran a red light and struck a pedestrian two years ago has been handed a fine and a final driving ban for Category D vehicles, the Debrecen Court announced.
According to the statement, the Debrecen District Court, which heard the case at first instance, delivered its verdict on March 3, finding the defendant guilty of negligently causing a road accident.
The 66-year-old man was fined HUF 320,000 and banned from driving for eight months.
The court of second instance upheld the amount of the fine imposed by the district court but reconsidered the driving ban, taking into account that such a ban may apply to specific types and categories of vehicles.
The court ruled that the defendant would be banned from driving Category D vehicles only for eight months, the statement said.
The accident occurred on November 4, 2024. The defendant was driving a scheduled bus along Széchenyi Street in Debrecen, travelling from Kossuth Street towards Külső-Vásártér. Despite the red traffic light, he entered the intersection and struck a pedestrian crossing at the zebra crossing with the front right side of the bus. The 62-year-old man sustained serious injuries in the accident, the statement said.
